North-Rhine Westfalia wants to make highways part of its environmental zones

In the context of the fight against air pollution and for traffic restriction, North-Rhine Westfalia proposes to make highways A40, A42 or even part of A2 be considered part of the environmental zone. Currently, these three highways go through the large environmental zone of the Ruhr area, but they are not affected by traffic restrictions nor by the obligation to drive with an environmental badge. If emissions are to be reduced significantly, there is no alternative. In other European countries, environmental zones also include highways, as is the case in France or Austria.
