European Commission critizises five Member States for bad air quality

The European Commission has recently criticized five of its Member States due to insufficient measures for the improvement of air quality in their cities. The concerned states are Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. The Commission has threatened these countries with the European Justice Court, in case they should fail to introduce measures for the reduction of air pollution within the next two months. This entails traffic restrictions. Until now only Poland and Bulgaria have been brought before the European Justice Court for excessive air pollution. More than 400,000 persons die each year in Europe as a consequence of air pollution
